Bahama’s: 2e jaarlijkse conferentie van de Caribbean Studies Association

In een toespraak tot de 26^ste tussentijdse vergadering van de Conferentie van Staatshoofden en Regeringsleiders van de Caribische Gemeenschap (februari 2015) heeft de voormalige Jamaicaanse minister-president, de heer P.J. Patterson, aangedrongen op de “dringende noodzaak (voor CARICOM lidstaten) om nieuwe ontwikkelingstrajecten te vinden die creativiteit en innovatie bevorderen in het streven om inclusieve, rechtvaardige en duurzame groei en ontwikkeling te bevorderen.

“Terwijl het Caribisch gebied een lange weg heeft afgelegd (via UNDP millenniumdoelstellingen voor ontwikkeling als een benchmark) blijft de regio te kort schieten in het realiseren van economische groei, het versterken van haar concurrentievermogen, het ontwikkelen van economische diversiteit en impact, en ‘Human Capital Output’.

Patterson’s evocatie van “creativiteit en innovatie” erkent impliciet de voortdurende afwezigheid van Caribische kennis, cultuur en economie in debatten over de toekomst van de regionale ontwikkeling.

Het thema van de conferentie in 2017 – Cultuur en kenniseconomieën: De toekomst van Caribbean Development? – focust zich op de veranderende rol van kennis, cultuur en economie in het Caribisch gebied, terwijl ondertussen de kwestie van de “ontwikkeling” historisch en in onze hedendaagse ogenblik geherpositioneerd wordt.

“Ontwikkeling” – in de betekenis van de manier waarop een samenleving er in slaagt om  beschikbare bronnen /middelen te benutten voor inclusieve, rechtvaardige en duurzame groei -is vaak gehinderd door paradigma’s  van benauwde economische, technische en publiek beleidstechnische aard.

Deze conferentie vraagt ons om te (her) overwegen wat allemaal als economische activiteit telt, culturele en creatieve inspanningen, veel kennis uit de brede maatschappelijke, culturele, institutionele en historische context van de slavernij, over onafhankelijkheid,  van nationale schuld, de globalisering en het rekenschap geven van de natuur.

Gevestigde culturele praktijken met inheemse en Afrikaanse wortels, traditionele en ambachtelijke vormen van kennis en onze menselijke vermogens (in de sport, performing podiumkunsten, dans etc.), zijn verspreid over de archipel beschikbaar in de vorm van muziek, ambacht, literaire kunst, culinaire inventiviteit, fashion design, festivals, theater , film,  medicijnen uit de “bush”, talen en wereld sportieve dominantie.

De CSA’s 2017 conferentie zal de gelegenheid bieden om het complexe en heterogene culturele en kennis landschap, als het aanbieden van nieuwe en / of verschillende modellen waardoor (her) voorstellen en (her) theoretiseren “inclusieve, rechtvaardige en duurzame” groeimogelijkheden voor de regio .

De CSA Conference Program Comité nodigt individuen uit om te komen met voorstellen, ideeën, initiatieven, ideeën voor activiteiten die georganiseerd kunnen worden naar aanleiding van bijvoorbeeld de resultaten van een gehouden wetenschappelijk onderzoek die verwoord zjjn in een wetenschappelijke publicatie, in een wetenschappelijk tijdschrift bijvoorbeeld, of ideeën voor workshops en rondetafelbijeenkomsten die georganiseerd kunnen worden langs thema’s verspreid over de breedste disciplinaire en methodologische range van onderwerpen die direct aangrijpen op het conferentie thema, alsmede de complexiteit van de regio, met name op het gebied van snijpunten van geslacht, ras, klasse, seksualiteit, nationaliteit, religie, etc. verwelkomt een groot aantal deelnemers, van onafhankelijke en opkomende geleerden bekende geleerden, van professionals uit het bedrijfsleven, de politiek, etc. en activisten, kunstenaars, en community-based onderzoekers.

We zijn zeer geïnteresseerd in en kijken uit naar werkplaats en rondetafel voorstellen waarmee  een diepgaande discussie opgeroepen zal worden met betrekking tot elk van de voorgestelde onderwerpsgebieden, bij voorkeur met de focus op bereiken of creëren van haalbare oplossingen en toepasbare modellen voor verandering.

Wij staan open voor voorstellen voor volledig samengestelde panels. Met name die panels die multi-disciplinair zijn en meertalig, krijgen de hoogste prioriteit. En graag ontvangen we opmerkingen en voorstellen met betrekking tot de reeks van vragen die gesteld worden over het algemene conferentie thema en daarvan afgeleid thema’s als (maar niet beperkt tot):

1 De rol en bijdrage van de “ontwikkeling” van theorie en praktijk;                                                                                          2. Het concipiëren van cultuur en kennis als een bron;                                                                                                               3. Regionale industrie, infrastructuur en productie;                                                                                                                     4. Instellingen voor development, praktijken, en teksten als culturele entiteiten;                                                                  5. Alternatieve modellen voor een duurzame economische integratie van het Caribisch gebied;                                      6. Complicaties en hinderpalen die toerisme als model voor ontwikkeling in de weg staan;                                                  7. Caribische creatieve verbeelding en kennis productie;                                                                                                            8. Definiëren van Caribische cultuur en kenniseconomie;                                                                                                          9. Caribische creatieve industrie;                                                                                                                                                     10. De rol van culturele teksten-literatuur, muziek, film, kunst, etc.- in reflecteren, vormgeven / definiëren, compliceren en of het integreren van ‘cultuur’ en traditionele kennis;                                                                                    11. Archivering van door een curator van cultuur en kennis;                                                                                                      12. Caribische kunst, ambacht, voedsel, festivals, muziek, atleten, mondiale grondstoffen;                                              13. De industrialisatie van cultuur;                                                                                                                                                 14. Bijdragen van de Caribische diaspora ‘met betrekking tot  regionale culturen en kennis’;                                           15. Beleid en bestuurlijke implicaties;                                                                                                                                                 16. Cultuurbeleid als essentialistische gebaar;                                                                                                                               17. Neoliberaal beleid en de neo-koloniale / postkoloniale staat;                                                                                               18. Caribische migratie en sociale bewegingen;                                                                                                                            19. Economische dimensies van culturele praktijken en producten;                                                                                      20. ‘Culturele’ factoren als een bron van differentiatie en concurrentievoordeel;                                                                    21. Beleid en uitvoeringspraktijk met betrekking tot het behoud van historie, cultuur en milieu;                                  22. Klimaatverandering en de invloed daarvan op de Caribische economieën, de mensen en omgevingen;                      23. Sociale systemen, zoals onderwijs, gezondheidszorg, religie;                                                                                            24. Caribische intellectuele bewegingen en ontwikkeling;                                                                                                         25. Radicale intellectuele ideeen in relatie tot cultuur en kennis productie;                                                                         26. Caribische feministische kritieken op de ontwikkeling;                                                                                                          27. Sociale rechtvaardigheid en maatschappelijke organisaties die cultuur mobiliseren.                                                  28. Cultuur en kennis in levensvatbare modellen;                                                                                                                      29. Internationalisering van reggae en Rastafarianism;                                                                                                               30. Caribische stijl, muziek en dans culturen;                                                                                                                                31. Beeldende kunst en wereldwijde culturele circuits;                                                                                                                 32. Hoe verhoudt het leveren van prestaties zich tot de Carnaval cultuur;                                                                                 33. Afro-Caribische en andere syncretische spiritualiteit en religieuze bewegingen.

Alle opmerkingen en presentaties op conferenties komen in aanmerking voor behandeling voor opname in een bewerkte ‘conference proceedings’ publicatie.

Richtlijnen voor Panel / Paper Inzendingen

Alle voorstellen moeten elektronisch worden ingediend via de website van CSA (niet via e-mail). De deadline voor individuele en panel inzendingen is 31 december 2016.

Abstracts mogen niet meer dan 125 woorden bevatten als het gaat om individuele papers of 250 woorden voor ideeën voor de opzet van panels

Titels voor individuele papers en voor panels, rondetafelgesprekken of werkplaatsen moeten niet langer zijn dan 70 tekens (we behouden ons het recht om deze kortheidshalve  te bewerken).

Voorgestelde panels of rondetafelgesprekken dienen minimaal 3 leden/deelnemers te bevatten en niet meer dan 4 presentatoren. Ook moet een panel voorzitter in het voorstel worden genoemd.

Paper titels en samenvattingen moeten in ten minste één andere taal worden ingediend naast Engels (Spaans, Frans of Haïtiaans Kreyol, Nederlands of Papiaments); meertalige abstracts zullen worden gepubliceerd in de elektronische versie van het programma.

De panels moeten streven naar een diversiteit aan talen, rangen, voorkeuren en disciplines vertegenwoordigen (dat wil zeggen, opname van afgestudeerde studenten en junior wetenschappers in panels met senior wetenschappers, activisten en / of beoefenaars, panels bestaande uit sociale wetenschappen, kunst en geesteswetenschappers).

Papers / presentaties die speciale apparatuur, inbouwruimte, kamers, vertaaldiensten, etc. nodig hebben, moeten op het aanmeldingsformulier worden vermeld.

Workshops moeten op strategie gericht zijn en je direct betrekken bij het onderwerpgebied, en moet duidelijke resultaten en doelstellingen omvatten.

Presentaties van films en beeldende en podiumkunsten, evenals gerelateerde panels, zijn welkom. Zie hiervoor de 2017 film en de beeldende en uitvoerende kunsten Comité Call for Proposals voor informatie en het indienen instructies.

De contributie moet worden betaald voor 15 januari 2017 (volgens de CSA grondwet, zijn we terug naar de jaarlijkse contributie per kalenderjaar; daarom eindigt het jaarlijks lidmaatschap  op 31 december) en de Conferentie registratie moet uiterlijk 1 maart 2017 worden betaald om in kranten / panels te verschijnen in het programma van de conferentie. Lidmaatschap en registratie details zijn beschikbaar op de website van CSA.

CSA biedt een beperkt aantal reisbeurzen aan huidige en potentiële leden die niet worden geholpen, geen toegang tot financiële middelen uit hun instellingen of landen hebben, en wie niet in staat zal zijn om de conferentie zonder hulp bij te wonen, in ruil voor vrijwilligerswerk tijdens de conferentie. 42nd Annual Conference of the Caribbean Studies Association

In an address to the 26th Inter-sessional Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (February 2015) former Jamaican Prime-Minister, The Most Honorable P.J. Patterson insisted on the “urgent need (for CARICOM member states) to find new development pathways that encourage creativity and innovation in the pursuit of inclusive, equitable, and sustainable growth and development.” While the Caribbean region has come a long way (using UNDP Millennium Development Goals as a benchmark) the region continues to fall short in economic growth, competitiveness, economic diversity and impact, and human capital output. Patterson’s evocation of “creativity and innovation” implicitly acknowledges the continuing absence of Caribbean knowledge, culture and economy in debates surrounding the future of regional development.   *

The 2017 conference theme—Culture and Knowledge Economies: The Future of Caribbean Development?—focuses on the shifting roles of knowledge, culture and economy in the Caribbean while repositioning the question of “development” historically and in our contemporary moment. “Development”—understood as the way a society manages available resources to drive inclusive, equitable and sustainable growth has often been plagued by narrow economic, technical and public policy paradigms. This conference asks us to (re)consider what counts as economic activity, cultural and creative endeavor, and knowledge regimes from the broad social, cultural, institutional and historic contexts of enslavement, independence, national debt, globalization and reckonings with nature.

Indigenous and African rooted cultural practices, traditional and artisanal forms of knowledge, and our human ability (in sports, performing arts, dance etc) abound across the archipelago whether in music, craft, literary arts, culinary inventiveness, fashion design, festivals, theater, film, “bush” medicine, languages and world athletic dominance. CSA’s 2017 conference will be the occasion to tarry on the complex and heterogeneous cultural and knowledge landscape as offering new and/or different models through which to (re)imagine and (re)theorize “inclusive, equitable and sustainable” growth possibilities for the region. **

The CSA Conference Program Committee invites scholarly papers, workshops, and roundtable proposals from individuals spanning the broadest disciplinary and methodological range whose work directly engages the conference theme as well as the complexities of the region, particularly in terms of the intersections of gender, race, class, sexuality, nationality, religion, etc. CSA welcomes a wide range of participants, from independent and emerging scholars to well-known scholars, from professionals in industry, politics, etc. to activists, artists, and community-based researchers. We are also very interested in workshop and roundtable proposals that offer in-depth discussion in any of the proposed topic areas with a focus on viable solutions and applicable models for change.

Fully constituted panels, in particular ones that are multi-disciplinary and multilingual, will be given first priority. Submissions and proposals can be made in relation to the range of questions related to the overall conference theme such as (but not limited to):

The role and contribution of “development” theory and practice; conceiving culture and knowledge as a resource; regional industries, infrastructure and production; development institutions, practices, and texts as cultural entities; alternative models for sustainable economic integration of the Caribbean; complications of tourism as the model for development. ***

Caribbean creative imagination and knowledge production; defining Caribbean culture and knowledge economy; Caribbean creative industries; role that cultural texts—literature, music, film, art, etc.—play in reflecting, shaping/defining, complicating and or integrating “culture” and traditional knowledge; archiving and curating culture and knowledge; Caribbean arts, craft, food, festivals, music, athletes, as global commodities; the industrialization of culture; Caribbean diasporas’ contribution to regional cultures and knowledge.

Policy and governance implications; cultural policy as essentialist gesture; neoliberal policies and the neo-colonial/postcolonial state; Caribbean migration and social movements; economic dimensions of cultural practices and products; “cultural” factors as a source of differentiation and competitive advantage; historic, cultural and environmental preservation policy and practice; climate change impact on Caribbean economies, people and environments; social systems such as education, health, religion.

Caribbean intellectual movements and development; radical intellectual thought in relation to culture and knowledge production; Caribbean feminist critiques of development; social justice and civil society organizations mobilizing culture.

Culture and knowledge viable models; internationalization of reggae and Rastafarianism; Caribbean style, music and dance cultures; visual art and global cultural circuits; performance and Carnival culture; Afro-Caribbean and other syncretic spiritualities and religious movements.

All submissions and conference presentations will be eligible for consideration for inclusion in an edited conference proceedings publication.

Guidelines for Panel/Paper Submissions

All proposals must be submitted electronically via the CSA website (NOT via email). The deadline for individual and panel submissions is December 31, 2016. ****

Abstracts must not exceed 125 words for individual papers or 250 words for panels.
Titles for individual papers and for panels, roundtables or workshops must not exceed 70 characters (we reserve the right to edit for brevity).
Proposed panels or roundtables should contain at least 3 and no more than 4 presenters, and panel chairperson must be named in the proposal.
Paper titles and abstracts should be submitted in at least one other language besides English (Spanish, French or Haitian Kreyol, Dutch or Papiamento); multilingual abstracts will be published in the electronic version of the program.
Panels should strive to represent a diversity of languages, rank, affiliations and disciplines (i.e., inclusion of graduate students and junior scholars on panels with senior scholars, activists, and/or practitioners; panels composed of social science, arts and humanities scholars).
Papers/presentations that require special equipment, installation space, rooms, translation services, etc., must be indicated on the submission form.
Workshops should be strategy focused and directly engage in the topic areas, and must include clearly stated outcomes and goals.
Presentations of films and visual and performing arts, as well as related panels, are welcome. Please see the 2017 Film and Visual & Performing Arts Committee Call for Proposals for information and submission instructions.

Membership dues must be paid by January 15, 2017 (as per the CSA constitution, we are returning to annual membership fees by calendar year; therefore annual membership ends 31 December) and Conference Registration must be paid by March 1, 2017 in order for papers/panels to appear in the conference program. Membership and registration details are available on the CSA website.

CSA offers a limited number of travel grants to assist current and potential members who do not have access to any funding from their institutions or countries, and who will not be able to attend the conference without assistance, in exchange for volunteer work during the conference.
